MONTEZUMA'S CASTLE
Montezuma
Castle National Monument is actually two different sites.
Montezuma Castle contains some of the best-preserved cliff
dwellings in the United States. The second location, Montezuma
Well, is located 7 miles northeast of Montezuma Castle and
features a large natural limestone sink, which fills with
water from an underground spring. Montezuma Well was used
for a network of prehistoric irrigation canals. The castle
is also headquarters for nearby Tuzigoot National Monument.
At Montezuma Castle the upper ruin has twenty rooms high
in an alcove in the cliff's wall and can only be reached
by two narrow trails. The lower ruin is at the base of the
cliff and has forty-five rooms. These rooms could only be
reached by using a ladder.
